The United States Marine Corps

The idea for the United States Marine Corps officially dates back to November 10, 1775, in of all places, a Philadelphia brew house at the corner of Water Street and Turn Alley.

In the days that led to the American Revolution, a committee of the Continental Congress met to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore. John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress, appointed Captain Samuel Nicholas to be commandant. The owner of the Tun Tavern, Robert Mullan, was named a Marine Captain. According to TunTavernLeathernecks.com, their first mission was to recruit marines, “With the offer of good ale and a good cause.”

Today, the Corps has approximately 200,000 active Marines on duty.
